How My Wife's Love and Support Empowered Me to Chase My Dream of Becoming a Philmont Ranger

Updated: Jan 22

Taking a leap into the unknown can be a daunting task. When I decided to apply to become a Philmont Ranger, I was seeking to embark on an adventure that would require a summer away from home (and my wife!), 1,700 miles to the west, in the stunning wilderness of New Mexico. But while I prepare for the actual challenge, mentally and physically, one thing is clear: I don't have to do it alone, thanks to my wife’s unwavering love and support.

From the very first time I shared my dream with her, my wife became my biggest cheerleader. Her immediate encouragement made all the difference. When doubts creep in, ("Are you sure I should do this?") she is always there, reminding me of my reasons for pursuing this dream, and what I would gain and what I would offer. Her belief helps me push past my doubts to take on this remarkable journey.

Having her support feels like finding a fluorescent blaze as I navigate the difficult trails. I know that as I face challenges on the path ahead, the love and belief my wife has in me will be my compass, my true north. Her support fuels my determination to make the most of my time as a Philmont Ranger, and with every step I take, I know she’ll be there in spirit, probably rolling her eyes at my questionable decision to climb another peak or spend another night sleeping on the ground!

You've heard it said, you may have even said it yourself; behind every successful person is a supportive partner. This has never been truer. My journey to Philmont could never happen, would never happen, and will be richer and more fulfilling, thanks to my wife's encouragement and love.

We often overlook the importance of the people who stand beside us, cheering us on as we pursue our dreams. For anyone considering their own adventure, remember that it’s often the love and support from those closest to us that help us reach heights we never thought possible.

Thank you, my love, for being my rock. I cannot do it without you.
